What is your typical "day in the life of a designer"?
My typical day has alignment meetings with other disciplines and teams, going over existing data and insights before designing new things, and creating prototypes to test with people.
Design principles you live by?
Starting to sketch on paper will help your ideas flow better.
A prototype is worth 1000 meetings (famous quote from IDEO).
User testing will always, always, always make you learn something new.
If you're not designing something that will improve someone's life, you shouldn't do it.
What problem can't you stop thinking about?
So many. How to reduce suffering or inequality, how many products and services are creating massive side effects on societies, how education systems are disconnected from what people need in life, etc.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
"The easiest way to not do something is to discuss it." It is actually an anti-advice I heard from an incredible teacher at CIID.
When is "Design done wrong"?
When it tries to trick people into doing something they clearly don't want to (privacy settings when you visit a new site might be the most widespread recent example of this).
Books you highly recommend for anyone pursuing a career in design?
O Mundo codification (The codified world) by Vilém Flusser - It was one of the most impactful books about design I've ever read, but I don't think this book was ever translated into English. The author uses a philosophical lens to interpret design topics. It's surprisingly up-to-date despite being first written in the 70s. If you have access to this book in a language you know, check it out.
The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman. A book that provided many terms that are ubiquitous in the design world, such as signifiers and affordances.
Nudge Book Summary by Richard Thaler. Behavioral economics has an enormous intersection with design, and this book is a good, lightweight introduction to them.
